Salon website study 2026: what 1,500 independent salons' websites get wrong
In October 2026 we took 1,500 independent hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, and skin, lash and brow studios at random from public US business listings and ran each one's website through the same 17-point check any owner can run for free. This is what a new client, Google, and an AI assistant find when they follow the link.
Checked October 11, 2026. 1,500 listings sampled, 872 web presences graded. How we did it · Download the figures (CSV)
Finding 1
More than a third of listed salon website links lead nowhere
Of the 1,344 listings we could check, 35% led to no working salon website: 260 domains no longer exist, 118 addresses return a page-not-found or server error, 20 are parked or for sale, 17 are closed booking pages that now open the booking platform's own homepage, 8 former salon domains now carry gambling spam, and 47 "websites" are an Instagram, Facebook, Yelp or TikTok profile rather than a site.
40 of the dead links still point at a business.site address, the free websites Google built from Business Profiles and switched off in 2024; since June 10, 2024 those addresses show a page-not-found error. The fix costs nothing: change the website link wherever your salon is listed.

Finding 2
One in three readable homepages has no way to book online
On the homepages we could read, 32% had no online booking link at all and another 6.9% had one only far down the page or offered a request form instead of a time. Some label a button "Book now" or "Make appointment" that only dials the phone. That matters because 71% of salon and spa regulars have skipped booking when it was too hard to reach someone or use the system.
Instead of a website, 24% of the salons we graded send visitors straight to a booking page (GlossGenius, Vagaro, Booksy, Acuity and others). That books clients in one tap, but the page lives on the platform's address, so every link and search visit builds the platform's web presence rather than the salon's own.
| Business | No booking link | Booking page as website | Most linked systems |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hair salon | 32% of 155 | 24% of 299 | GlossGenius, Vagaro |
| Beauty salon | 32% of 129 | 28% of 264 | GlossGenius, Vagaro |
| Nail salon | 41% of 69 | 12% of 111 | GlossGenius, Vagaro |
| Barbershop | 25% of 44 | 26% of 97 | Booksy, Square Appointments |
| Skin, lash and brow | 28% of 51 | 23% of 101 | GlossGenius, Vagaro |
Finding 3
A third of salon homepages are blank until scripts run
33% of salons' own websites arrived with almost no readable text: the words, prices and booking buttons appear only after the page's scripts run. People see a normal page, but AI assistants and search tools that read the page as it arrives see close to nothing. 94 of the 102 Square Online sites in the sample read this way.
Finding 4
Most salon sites tell Google and AI assistants very little
Only 14% of salon websites carry structured business details (the hidden HairSalon or LocalBusiness data with address and phone that search engines and assistants read), and 57% carry none at all. 47% have no search snippet, so Google writes one for them.
The good news: only 1.5% block AI search crawlers in robots.txt, so almost every salon site can be read by ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest. The gap is what they find there, not whether they are let in.
Finding 5
The phone and the reviews are where trust leaks
Only 45% of readable homepages make the phone number a tap-to-call link; 31% show it as plain text a phone visitor has to copy, and 24% show no number at all. 60% show no reviews or testimonials on the homepage, although 75% of consumers regularly read reviews when choosing a local business.
Among homepages that show a copyright year, 33% still show a year before 2025, and 14% of salon websites do not load securely over https.
Finding 6
GlossGenius and Vagaro power most salon booking links
Where we could recognize the booking system behind a salon's website or booking page (369 salons), GlossGenius accounted for 29% and Vagaro for 24%. Barbershops lean on Booksy and Square instead. Compare the systems side by side in our salon software guides.

Content checks are counted over 448 salon-owned homepages with readable text; page-head checks over all 667 salon-owned websites. Page speed is not judged in the study (it ran from outside the US). The 17-point checklist explains each item and how to fix it.
By site builder
What the site builder gets right, and what it leaves to you
62% of Wix salon sites carry salon structured data, against 1.4% on Squarespace and 5.6% on Shopify. The builder decides much of what search engines can read, unless someone adds it by hand.
| Built with | Sites | Booking link near top | Structured data | Tap to call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custom or other | 112 | 41% | 13% | 57% |
| WordPress | 102 | 67% | 8.8% | 56% |

Method
How the study was done
Population. Every US place in the Overture Maps Foundation places dataset (release 2026-09-23.1, CDLA Permissive 2.0) categorized as a hair salon, beauty salon, barber, nail salon, or skin, lash, brow, waxing or esthetics business, not marked closed, and listing a website: 418,090 places. We removed branded chains and any website shared by three or more locations (101,537), leaving 316,553 independent businesses.
Sample. 1,500 of them drawn at random (fixed seed 20261011), which spreads across every state roughly in proportion to where salons are. Day spas and massage businesses are not included.
The check. On 2026-10-11 each listed address was read once by the SalonAI website check, identifying itself as SalonAI-WebsiteCheck: the homepage and robots.txt only, nothing behind a login, nothing stored about any individual business beyond the aggregates on this page. Page speed is not judged here because the check ran from outside the US.
What was graded. 92 addresses refused automated visitors or timed out, and 64 listings pointed at an unrelated business (a listing error), so both are left out. Of the rest, 872 loaded as a salon's web presence: 667 salon-owned websites and 205 booking or link pages. Checks that read the page content (booking, phone, address, prices, reviews, social links, footer year) are counted over the 448 own websites with readable text, because a page drawn entirely by scripts cannot be judged that way; checks that read the page head (title, snippet, structured data, crawler rules, https, phone setup) are counted over all 667.
Accuracy. Before publishing we looked at a random set of results by eye: on six homepages the check reported as having no booking link, it was right all six times (three had a booking button that only dials the phone). Where it misjudged a kind of site (closed GlossGenius pages, Acuity and Setmore scheduling pages, Booksy pages that hand visitors to an app link) we fixed the check for everyone and re-ran those sites. With these sample sizes, a share is accurate to within about 4.6 percentage points (content checks) and 3.8 points (page-head checks), 19 times out of 20.
Limits. Listing data lags reality, so some dead links belong to salons that have closed or moved. The check reads the homepage as it arrives, so a booking link added by scripts, or one on another page, is not counted. The figures describe independent salons in public listings, not every salon in the country.
