New Mexico esthetician scope of practice
What can an esthetician do in New Mexico?
New Mexico licenses estheticians as an Esthetician through the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. A basic esthetician license covers cleansing and stimulating the skin, massage, light therapy and facial machine treatments, makeup and lash and brow products, and hair removal other than electrolysis, invasive techniques and shaving; services not on that list are outside the license. Below: whether that license covers microneedling, chemical peels, dermaplaning, laser and IPL, and Botox or fillers, each answered from New Mexico's own statutes, board rules or board statements, read on October 27, 2026.

Microneedling
Can estheticians do microneedling in New Mexico?
No. The Medical Board says microneedling is a regulated medical procedure that only licensed medical providers (MD, DO, APRN or PA) may perform, and estheticians may not perform it without medical assistant training and physician delegation.
Chemical peels
Can estheticians do chemical peels in New Mexico?
No. The Medical Board's medical spa policy says chemical peels must be performed by a licensed medical provider (MD, DO, APRN or PA), not by an esthetician under the esthetician license.
Dermaplaning
Can estheticians do dermaplaning in New Mexico?
Not stated. New Mexico's official pages we read do not settle whether a licensed esthetician may do dermaplaning. Ask the New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists before you offer it.
Laser and IPL
Can estheticians do laser hair removal in New Mexico?
Only with conditions. Laser, IPL and light-based hair removal may be done only by a medical assistant trained and certified on the specific device, under direct physician supervision and written protocols, not under the esthetician license alone.
Botox and fillers
Can estheticians do Botox or fillers in New Mexico?
No. Botox, fillers and any other injection must be performed by a licensed medical provider (MD, DO, APRN or PA), and estheticians may not perform injectables under their own license.
Advanced license
Does New Mexico have a master esthetician license?
New Mexico's official pages we read name no advanced or master esthetician license; the basic Esthetician license is the one that sets the scope.
